The last official holiday of summer is upon us. Ever wonder why a holiday named labor is a time when many take a long weekend off from work? We did, so we did a little research. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It is meant to pay tribute to the contributions that workers make to the overall prosperity and well-being of the U.S.  It always falls on the first Monday in September.

Early attempts to make it a holiday were city ordinances. Then, the first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature. The first state to officially recognize Labor Day, however, was Oregon in 1887.  All holidays have their controversies and this one is no different. There’s disagreement over the original founder of Labor Day.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first to suggest the special day.

Others  believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, founded the holiday. McGuire, Maguire–take your pick.

Today’s Labor Day has drifted from labor rallies and union halls to campsites and barbecues. However, you decide to spent this holiday weekend, we hope you’ll be with those you love and have a safe time. Take care and Happy Labor Day!
